The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Publisher versions 1.0 and 1.0a - Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

When an Excel chart is linked to a Publisher document, the chart image changes size depending on the size of the chart window in Excel at that time.

MORE INFORMATION

Excel provides the chart image linked to Publisher. The link is automatic by default. In addition, the chart window in Excel dictates the size of the chart image in Publisher.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Create an Excel chart (.XLC file).
  2. Select the Excel chart from a maximized active chart window.
  3. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.
  4. Switch to Publisher.
  5. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.
  6. Select Metafile, Bitmap, or Native.
  7. Choose Paste Link.
  8. Note the size of the chart in Publisher.
  9. Switch back to Excel and change the side of the chart window containing the linked chart. Maximize it or reduce it significantly so you can witness the change.
  10. Switch back to Publisher and note the change.

WORKAROUND

If you use the Paste command in Publisher instead of Paste Special, the chart image does not resize. This is because the Excel chart will not be linked to Publisher. Microsoft has confirmed this problem occurs with Microsoft Excel for Windows 4.0a when you link objects to other applications. There is no way at this time to change the links in Publisher 1.0 from automatic update to manual update. Publisher 2.0 and 2.0a allow the link to be set to manual update, which allows control of the sizing in the destination application.
