XL5: Time to Start and Exit Microsoft Excel Seems Longer

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, you may notice it takes more time to start and exit the program than in earlier versions.

With a complete installation of Microsoft Excel, the following add-ins are loaded automatically when you start the program:

MS Query Add-in

Report Manager
Solver Add-in

View Manager

Along with these add-ins, .DLL files necessary for OLE and for the Microsoft Visual Basic Programming System, Applications Edition are also loaded. These add-ins and .DLL files add to the time required to start Microsoft Excel.

When you exit Microsoft Excel version 5.0, before control is completely returned to Microsoft Windows, the following things occur:

Visual Basic files close

OLE files close
Microsoft Excel files close (such as add-ins)

Microsoft Windows unloads .DLL's and EXCEL.EXE from memory.

WORKAROUND

To optimize the amount of time it takes to start and exit Microsoft Excel, you can remove the add-ins that are loaded automatically by doing the following:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Add-Ins.
  2. In the Add-Ins Available list, clear the check box next to each add-in that you do not want loaded automatically when you start the program and choose OK.
