SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel versions 5.x and 7.0, if you copy a picture of a dialog box frame when the dialog box is not actually running, objects in the pasted picture will appear in the wrong location and random dots and lines may appear throughout the picture.

MORE INFORMATION

To copy a picture of a dialog frame, do the following:

  1. Run the dialog box, either by running a macro or subroutine that displays the dialog box or by choosing Run Dialog from the Tools menu when the dialog sheet is active.
  2. When the dialog box appears on the screen, press ALT+PRINT SCREEN. This creates a picture of the dialog box in the Clipboard.
  3. Press ESC to remove the dialog box from the screen.

The Clipboard now contains a picture of the dialog box as it appeared when you pressed ALT+PRINT SCREEN. This picture can be pasted into Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Paintbrush, or any other application that supports pasted bitmaps.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

To see what happens if you copy a picture of a dialog frame when the dialog box is not running, do the following:

  1. On a new dialog sheet, create a dialog box that contains any controls you like.
  2. Select the frame of the dialog box by clicking once in the frame's title bar.
  3. Press and hold down the SHIFT key and choose Copy Picture from the Edit menu.
  4. In the Copy Picture dialog box, set the Appearance option to As Shown On Screen and the Format option to Picture. Choose the OK button to accept the changes.
  5. Activate a new worksheet.
  6. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.

In the image that appears, the caption for the dialog frame will be in the correct place, but almost every other aspect of the image's appearance will be incorrect. Controls may or may not appear; if they do, they will not appear in the correct places. Also, dots and lines will appear throughout the image in seemingly random locations.
