General Protection Fault When Playing Earlier Indeo Files

  • Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.0, 3.1

SUMMARY

You may experience a general protection (GP) fault (in Microsoft Windows 3.1) or an Unrecoverable Application Error (UAE) (in Microsoft Windows 3.0) when playing an .AVI file that was compressed with the Intel Indeo Video R3.1 CD-ROM Compressor (version 3.12.040) that shipped with Video for Windows 1.1. The error occurs if the playback system has an earlier version of the Indeo compressor version 3.01.036, dated 07/02/93.

The solution is to upgrade to the current R3.1 version of the driver, which can be obtained as follows:

  1. Indeo Video, R3.1, version 3.11.041 is contained in the self- extracting file INDOVW.EXE, which can be downloaded from the following sources:

          CompuServe [Go Intelaccess] section 9
          -or-
          Intel BBS section 9 at (916) 356-3600
  2. Upgrade to Video for Windows 1.1. To obtain pre-sales information about new or updated Microsoft products, call Microsoft Sales Information Center (MSIC) at (800) 426-9400. If you are outside the United States, contact the Microsoft subsidiary for your area.
  3. Obtain Video for Windows 1.1 run-time available from the Microsoft Software Library. To locate the file, search on the word VFWRUN11.EXE. VFWRUN11.EXE is a compressed, self-extracting file. After you download VFWRUN11.EXE, run it to extract the file(s) it contains.

    VFWRUN11.EXE can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Service (MSDL). The number for the MSDL is (425) 936-6735. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The highest download speed available is 14,400 bits per second (bps). VFWRUN11.EXE is a compressed, self-extracting file. After you download VFWRUN11.EXE, run it to extract the file(s) it contains.
