This file contains information about Microsoft Bookshelf that was unavailable when the User’s Guide was printed. To read this file on screen, use the Page Down and Page Up keys. To print the file, choose the Print command from the File menu.

=================== CORRECTING SOUND PROBLEMS ===================

If you don’t hear anything when you play animations or pronunciations, be sure that

a sound card is installed
a speaker is connected to the jack on your sound card (not to the CD-ROM drive)
the volume is set to an audible level

You can test sounds with the Sound option in the Windows Control Panel. If you hear no sound during the tests, open the Drivers option to check the sound driver files. These drivers must be compatible with your sound board. Be sure that drivers for both WAVE audio and MIDI synthesized music appear in the Drivers dialog box. If necessary, set up your sound board again. If you still can’t hear sounds, contact the sound board manufacturer to verify that you are using the correct drivers and that no hardware conflicts exist.

If you have installed Windows 3.1 and can play pronunciations but not musical examples, you might need to change your MIDI map. When Windows 3.1 is installed, Setup renames the MIDIMAP.CFG file to MIDIMAP.OLD and installs a new MIDIMAP.CFG file. If your original MIDIMAP.CFG file contains custom setups that use sound drivers not provided by Windows, you can change the port settings using the MIDI Mapper option in the Control Panel, or you can use your original file by performing the following steps:

Rename MIDIMAP.CFG to MIDIMAP.WIN.
Rename MIDIMAP.OLD to MIDIMAP.CFG.

=============== IMPROVING PERFORMANCE ===============

Microsoft Bookshelf 1993 for Windows uses a lot of your system memory to display graphics and animations. If Bookshelf seems to run slowly, the following steps might improve your computer’s performance:

Close all unnecessary applications.
If your computer is a 386, set up a permanent Windows swap file on your hard drive. See your Windows User’s Guide for more information. Windows usually creates a temporary swap file, but if your hard disk is full or fragmented, this temporary file can become unavailable. Make the size of the permanent swap file at least 2048K.
If your computer runs at 20 MHz or slower and you have only 2 MB of RAM, use a 16-color driver for your display, even if your video card is capable of displaying 256 colors. To change the display driver, run the Microsoft Windows Setup program from DOS or Windows and select the standard VGA driver.
If you have a 386 with only 2MB of RAM and you encounter out-of-memory errors, or if sound is not continuous and animations are slow, choose About Program Manager from the Help menu in the Program Manager window, and see if you’re running in Standard mode. If the dialog box shows that Windows is using Standard mode, exit and then restart Windows by typing WIN at the DOS prompt.
Run Bookshelf without the SmartDrive device driver. To disable SmartDrive, open the CONFIG.SYS file in Notepad, change the DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS line to REM DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS, and then save the edited CONFIG.SYS file.
Defragment (“clean up”) your hard disk by running a disk defragmentation program.
Ensure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC-compatible (that the drive can transfer data from the CD at 150 KB per second while using less than 40% of the CPU bandwidth AND that the drive has an average seek time of less than one second). Check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive.
Add more extended memory to your computer. You can determine how much extended memory is available by typing MEM and pressing Enter at the DOS prompt. You need a minimum of two megabytes of memory to play sounds and run animations.

============= GENERAL USAGE NOTES =============

The Bookshelf 1993 Setup program allows you to uninstall previous versions of Bookshelf. Note, however, that if both Bookshelf 1991 and Bookshelf 1992 are installed on your machine, and you intend to uninstall them, you must run the Setup program twice–deleting a version each time. (By deleting previous versions you will save disk space.) Note that if you exit Setup before completion, some of the previous version’s icons and files might remain. Simply delete these old icons manually.
Bookmarks and annotations are not updated when you change versions of Bookshelf. If you install a new version, you must recreate any bookmarks or annotations you desire.
QuicKeys are disabled whenever the Quote of the Day feature is active.
Pressing a QuicKey combination replaces the contents of the Clipboard.
Using the Link tool or Word Link command replaces the contents of the Clipboard with the article being sent to Microsoft Word.
If a screensaver takes over the screen during an animated Help demonstration, the animation will be reset to the first frame. (You might want to disable screensavers while viewing the Help animations.)
Long country names might appear slightly offset in the Flag Browser (Atlas). To solve this problem, delete the CTL3D.DLL file from the directory.
When copying 256-color images, be aware that unless you copy to a program that can handle 256 colors, such images will appear in 16 colors.

================= HARDWARE-SPECIFIC NOTES =================

The following are known hardware-specific issues that can affect Bookshelf. Where possible, solutions or workarounds are provided.

Dell 16-color drivers (512K memory)

A white outline surrounds animations.

Tiga 16-bit driver (640x480)

Bold phrases and hot text sometimes shift down by about half a line, partially obscuring the text beneath them. Moving to a different topic and then returning typically solves the problem.

Tiga 24-bit driver (640x480)

A white outline surrounds animations, partially obscuring other animation elements and labels.
Some graphics might appear slightly fuzzy and grainy.

DeskJet 500C Color Printer

If you try to print in color while using the unidrv.dll driver, you might experience problems. To solve the problem, choose Print Setup from the File menu. Choose Options, and then be sure that the Color box is unchecked. Then try printing again.

======================================= INTEGRATION OF BOOKSHELF AND WORD FOR WINDOWS =======================================

During Setup, you will be given the option of installing the feature that integrates Bookshelf and Word for Windows if your system meets the following conditions:

A non-network version of Word for Windows 2.0 is installed.
Your WIN.INI file contains a [Microsoft Word 2.0] section that includes a programdir={path} line and specifies a valid WINWORD.EXE file.
Your hard drive has enough space to support this feature.

If you install the integration feature, the Setup program modifies NORMAL.DOT, Word’s global document template, to customize the Word Toolbar and menus. Changes you have made to the Toolbar, to the default menus, and so on, are preserved. Your original NORMAL.DOT file is saved as NORMAL.WAB.

The integration feature also adds two items to Bookshelf: a Link tool in the toolbox and a Word Link command on the Tools menu.

Setup also modifies your WIN.INI file, setting options in the [Microsoft Word 2.0] section and adding a [Bookshelf] section.

To send a topic from Bookshelf to Word, simply click the Link tool, or choose Word Link from the Tools menu. Detailed information on this feature is available from Bookshelf Help.
