  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c, 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Word 6.0 for Windows document from a floppy disk drive into Word 2.0, you may experience a general protection (GP) fault, resulting in closure of Word 2.0 and/or Windows.

This problem occurs only if you have manually installed the version of the Word 6.0 converter for use with Word 2.0 that is furnished with Word 6.0. This problem does not occur if you have installed MSWORD6.CNV from the Word for Windows 6.0 Converter Kit.

CAUSE

Microsoft has identified this as a problem that may occur when another background Windows process is polling the floppy disk drive at the same time you are trying to open a Word 6.0 document into Word 2.0.

WORKAROUND

We have addressed this problem in an updated version of the converter file MSWORD6.CNV, which is supplied with the Word 6.0 for Windows Converter Kit (part number 059-150-345). For more information on accessing this kit, query in the Microsoft Knowledge Base on the following words:
