Error Opening Filename Added to Menu with Shortcut Method

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 6.0

When you add a filename to the File menu using the CTRL+ALT+EQUAL SIGN shortcut method, and you try to open the file by choosing the filename from the File menu, you get the following error message:

Word Cannot Open the Document (document name)

This problem as also been reported when using the WordBasic command FileOpenFile.

If you add a document filename to the File menu using the CTRL+ALT+EQUAL SIGN method, Word doesn't add the path information to the filename.

If the current directory is not the same directory that the document file is in, Word cannot open the document.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Word 6.0 for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
