If you cut and then paste a column selection in a document you opened in Text Only file format, Word for MS-DOS changes the file format from Text Only to Word Document in the File Save As dialog box. Previous versions of Word do not change the file format from Text Only after you cut and paste a column selection.

STATUS

We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Cutting and pasting in a text file should not change the file format. The only time Word should change the file format is if you apply document formatting, such as margins, font changes, or footnotes, that cannot be saved in Text Only file format.
