WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c - Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

Word for Windows may issue the following error message when you perform a print merge operation on selected records (for example, from record 10 to record 15):

The requested first record is beyond the end of the print merge data file.

CAUSE

This problem is frequently seen with large comma-delimited dBASE files. The problem results from misplaced field delimiters. For example, in the following sample data document, there is a misplaced quotation mark between Bob and Smith in the first record (the second record is a valid record):

name, address “Bob”Smith“,”111 Main St" “Sue Jones”, “222 Main St”

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in versions 2.x of Word for Windows. This problem was corrected in version 6.0 of Word for Windows.

WORKAROUND

Remove all the misplaced quotation marks.
