PRACC9309: Custom Setup Gives Misleading Low Disk Space Error

PSS ID Number: Q103994 Article last modified on 10-12-1993

1.10 WINDOWS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Access Distribution Kit version 1.1

SYMPTOMS

When you run Custom Setup with only a small amount of hard disk space available, the Setup program alerts you to make additional disk space available. However, the amount of disk space that you are told to free up is not enough to complete the entire Setup program. Subsequently, you get a Setup error message.

CAUSE

This error occurs because Setup calculates only the remaining space required for a successful Setup, based on the files that it provides. It does not take into account the space that your application’s files will require. For example, say that you have only 10K of hard disk space remaining and you attempt to run Custom Setup. You get an error message stating that you need an additional 90K of disk space. In reality, this number reflects only how much more disk space you need to install the Microsoft Access Distribution Kit (ADK) Setup support files, not your own application’s files.

RESOLUTION

Estimate the size of your application and free at least that amount, if not more, of disk space to allow for all required files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Access Distribution Kit version 1.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
