Publisher: Create From File Accepts Device Name and Hangs
Q102112
------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Publisher for Windows, versions 2.0, 2.0a ------------------------------------------------------------------- SYMPTOMS ======== The Create From File option allows you to try to create embedded objects from reserved device names, such as COM1 and LPT1. If you try to do this and you actually have a device connected to the port, with Windows 95 the error message: Not enough memory to complete this operation. Close one or more applications and try again. appears; with Windows 3.x, Publisher stops responding (hangs). If nothing is connected to the port, you will receive a series of error messages. Instead of allowing this to happen, Publisher should present a message such as the following: This filename is a reserved device name. Use a different name. Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in OLE 2.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available. MORE INFORMATION ================ Steps to Reproduce Problem -------------------------- 1. From the Edit menu, choose Insert Object. 2. Select Create From File. 3.
