INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to manually remove the following programs:

  • Microsoft Office Accounting Professional 2008 or Microsoft Office Accounting Express 2008
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To manually remove these programs, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: On a Windows XP-based computer

  1. Exit all programs.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. In the "Add or Remove Programs" window, click Microsoft Office Accounting 2008, and then click Change/Remove.
  4. In the Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 Setup wizard, click Remove, and then click Next.

    Note By default, the Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 check box and the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ) check box are selected. This indicates that these programs will be removed.
  5. Click Next, and then click Remove.
  6. Click to select the Microsoft Office Small Business Connectivity Components check box, and then click Remove.

    Note If you use SQL Server 2005 for other programs, do not perform steps 7 through 9.
  7. Click to select the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client check box, and then click Remove.
  8. Click to select the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English) check box, and then click Remove.
  9. Click to select the Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer check box, and then click Remove.
  10. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents directory, and then delete the "Shared Companies" folder.
  11. Locate the C:\Documents and Settings\User_name\My Documents directory, and then delete the "Small Business Accounting" folder.
  12. Repeat step 11 for each user name.

    Note The "Small Business Accounting" folder may not exist.
  13. Locate the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business directory, and then delete the following folders:
    • Office Accounting 2008
    • Office Accounting 2008 Addins
    • Small Business Loader
  14. Locate the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server directory, and then locate the MSSQL.x folder. Then, use one of the following procedures:
    • If you use SQL Server only for Accounting Professional 2008 or for Accounting Express 2008, right-click the Microsoft SQL Server folder, and then click Delete.
    • If other programs use SQL Server, or if you are not sure whether other programs use SQL Server, you must delete the appropriate folder. To determine which folder must be deleted, follow these steps:
      1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
      2. Locate the following registry subkey:

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSMLBIZ\Setup

      3. In the right window pane, note the x value in the SQLPath registry entry. This value indicates the folder that you must delete.
      4. To delete the correct folder, right-click the MSSQL.x folder, and then click Delete.
    Note x is a placeholder for an actual numeric value.
  15. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  16. Locate the following registry subkeys, and then delete the following registry subkeys:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Small Business
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Small Business Management
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Small Business Accounting\3.0
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Small Business Accounting Addins\3.0
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Small Business Accounting\InstalledVersions

      Note If you have earlier versions of Accounting Professional or Accounting Express installed, locate the 3.0 registry subkey, right-click the 3.0 registry subkey, and then click Delete.
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSMLBIZ

Method 2: On a Windows Vista-based computer

  1. Exit all programs.
  2. Click Start, type appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
  3. Click Microsoft Office Accounting 2008, click Uninstall/Change, and then click Continue.
  4. In the Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 Setup wizard, click Remove, and then click Next.

    Note By default, the Microsoft Office Accounting 2008 check box and the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (MSSMLBIZ) check box are selected. This indicates that these programs will be removed.
  5. Click Next, and then click Remove.
  6. Click to select the Microsoft Office Small Business Connectivity Components check box, and then click Uninstall.

    Note If you use SQL Server 2005 for other programs, do not perform steps 7 through 9.
  7. Click to select the Microsoft SQL Server Native Client check box, and then click Uninstall.
  8. Click to select the Microsoft SQL Server Setup Support Files (English) check box, and then click Uninstall.
  9. Click to select the Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer check box, and then click Uninstall.
  10. Locate the C:\Users\Public\Documents directory, and then delete the "Shared Companies" folder.
  11. Locate the C:\Users\User_name\Documents directory, and then delete the "Small Business Accounting" folder.
  12. Repeat step 11 for each user name.

    Note The "Small Business Accounting" folder may not exist.
  13. Locate the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Small Business directory, and then delete the following folders:
    • Office Accounting 2008
    • Office Accounting 2008 Addins
    • Small Business Loader
  14. Locate the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server directory, and then locate the MSSQL.x folder. Then, use one of the following procedures:
    • If you use SQL Server only for Accounting Professional 2008 or for Accounting Express 2008, right-click the Microsoft SQL Server folder, and then click Delete.
    • If other programs use SQL Server, or if you are not sure whether other programs use SQL Server, you must delete the appropriate folder. To determine which folder must be deleted, follow these steps:

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Small Business Accounting\InstalledVersions

      Note If you have earlier versions of Accounting Professional or Accounting Express installed, locate the 3.0 registry subkey, right-click the 3.0 registry subkey, and then click Delete.
