SUMMARY

This article contains information about when to use the backup feature in Windows Live OneCare or when to use the automatic backup feature in Windows Vista or in Windows Home Server. We recommend that you do not use both backup features at the same time.

MORE INFORMATION

When you use the backup feature in Windows Live OneCare, it detects whether the automatic backup feature in Windows Vista or in Windows Home Server is turned on. If you run the backup feature in Windows Live OneCare and the automatic backup feature in Windows Vista or in Windows Home Server at the same time, you may experience slow performance on the computer. We recommend that you use only one of these backup features.

If you have a computer on a network that is running Windows Home Server, we recommend that you turn off the backup feature in Windows Live OneCare and that you use the backup feature in Windows Home Server. If your computer is not part of a Windows Home Server network, you can leave the backup feature in Windows Live OneCare turned on.

To turn off the backup feature in Windows Live OneCare, follow these steps:

  1. Start Windows Live OneCare.
  2. Under Quick links, click Change settings.
  3. On the Backup tab, click Configure backup.
  4. Follow the appropriate step:
    • If you have not configured your backup settings, click Next.
    • If you have configured your backup settings, click Change settings, and then click the computer on which you want to turn off the backup feature.
  5. Select the Turn off backup on this PC check box, and then click Next.
  6. Click Save.

If you have Windows Live OneCare installed on a computer that is running Windows Vista, we recommend that you turn off the backup feature in Windows Vista. We recommend that you use the backup feature in Windows Live OneCare instead. Windows Live OneCare can turn off the automatic backup feature in Windows Vista, or you can turn off the automatic backup feature manually.

To manually turn off the automatic backup feature in Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start [GRAPHIC: the Start button ], and then type backup in the Start Search box.
  2. Under Programs, click Backup Status.
  3. In the Backup Status and Configuration dialog box, click Turn off.
