SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Update, Office Update, or Automatic Updates, you are unexpectedly offered Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 3 (SP3) and other updates to Office 2003. This issue may occur even when no Office 2003 programs appear to be installed.

CAUSE

This issue may frequently occur when Microsoft Office 2003 Web Components is installed. Office 2003 Web Components was released with Office 2003 and is updated by Office 2003 SP3. Office 2003 Web Components may be installed by programs other than Office 2003. These other programs include some Web applications. In these cases, you may not be aware that Office 2003 Web Components is installed.

RESOLUTION

When you are offered updates, such as Office 2003 SP3 or other updates, install the updates to guarantee the latest in the security and stability of all Office 2003 programs and of Office 2003 Web Components. When you use Microsoft Update, Office Update, or Automatic Updates, your computer downloads only those components that are required to update your software.
