RAPID PUBLISHING
RAPID PUBLISHING ARTICLES PROVIDE INFORMATION DIRECTLY FROM WITHIN THE MICROSOFT SUPPORT ORGANIZATION. THE INFORMATION CONTAINED HEREIN IS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO EMERGING OR UNIQUE TOPICS, OR IS INTENDED SUPPLEMENT OTHER KNOWLEDGE BASE INFORMATION.
Action
When running the Analyze.exe utility to perform regular database maintenance against a Visual SourceSafe data repository; the utility may stop responding during Pass 3 (Advanced Reference Verification)
Result
No data loss occurs, the tool simply stops running.
Cause
There is corruption of the reference paths which maintain the link between child and parent projects and files.
Resolution
Run analyze using the -refv6 flag. This will revert to the Visual SourceSafe 6.0 version of analyze and stop Advanced Reference Verification.
NOTE: Whenever possible, please run the Visual SourceSafe Analyze.exe utility local on the server which is home to the VSS Share. This will dramatically increase the performance of the tool. If this is not possible, use the second example below.
Examples:
VSS Analyze.exe run localy
c:\program files\microsoft visual sourcesafe\analyze.exe -f -refv6 -v4 c:\vssshare\vssdatabase1\data
VSS Analyze.exe run against a remote share
c:\program files\microsoft visual sourcesafe\analyze.exe -f -refv6 -v4 [[|\\vssshare\vssdatabase\data]]
You will then need to run the Datawizard utility as a stand-alone application or have Microsoft Visual SourceSafe Support manually repair the corruption. Depending on how extensive this corruption is and the size of your Visual SourceSafe repository, this may not be covered within the scope of a standard support incident. Please call Microsoft Developer Support for more information.
