SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario. Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Microsoft Office 2003 are installed on a Microsoft Window XP-based computer or on a Microsoft Window 2000-based computer. Additionally, you enable the "Run only allowed Windows applications" policy for iexplore.exe. When you click a hyperlink in an Office 2003 program, a Web page is opened in a new Internet Explorer 6 window. Then, you upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to Windows Internet Explorer 7. In this scenario, when you click a hyperlink in an Office 2003 program to open a Web page in a new Internet Explorer 7 window, you receive the following error message:
CAUSE
When you upgrade from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 7, the value of the (Default) registry entry is changed as follows:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
When you use Internet Explorer 6, the value of the (Default) registry entry is as follows:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome
RESOLUTION
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command - Double-click (Default).
- In the Edit String dialog box, type "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -nohome, and then click OK.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
