Error message when you start a data-sharing session in Communicator 2005 on a Windows Vista-based computer: "A data sharing session could not be established with <UserName>"

SYMPTOMS

When you start a data-sharing session in Microsoft Office Communicator 2005 on a Windows Vista-based computer, you receive the following error message:

A data sharing session could not be established with UserName. Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact your system administrator.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because Communicator 2005 uses Microsoft NetMeeting when you start a data-sharing session. By default, Windows Vista does not include NetMeeting. Therefore, Communicator 2005 cannot start the data-sharing session.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install NetMeeting. For more information about how to install NetMeeting, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

927853 A hotfix is available to install NetMeeting 3.02 on computers that are running Windows Vista

After you apply hotfix 927853, restart the computer.
