SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Windows Home Server, you may experience one of the following symptoms.

Symptom 1

The Setup program stops, and you receive the following error message:

Windows Home Server Setup Error
Hard drive capable of hosting Windows Home Server was not found. Would you like to load additional storage drivers?

Symptom 2

At the end of the Setup process, you receive a warning message that the network adapter driver is not installed.

CAUSE

Cause of Symptom 1

This problem occurs if the device driver for the storage controller on the computer is not included in Windows Home Server.

Cause of Symptom 2

This problem occurs if the device driver for the network adapter on the computer is not included in Windows Home Server.

If the computer has an unsupported network adapter, the network adapter is not installed on the computer after the Setup program finishes. Therefore, home computers cannot connect to the home server.

You can determine whether a network adapter is installed on the computer. To do this in Windows Vista, click Start[GRAPHIC: Start button], type ncpa.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. To do this in Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type ncpa.cpl, and then press ENTER.

RESOLUTION

Resolution for Symptom 1

To resolve this problem, manually install a driver for the storage controller during setup. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the drivers for the storage controller. The drivers are provided by the hardware manufacturer. The drivers may also be available on the manufacturer's Web site.
  2. Copy the drivers onto a floppy disk or a USB drive.

Note If you copy the drivers to a folder, do not use a space in the folder name.

  1. Start the computer from the Windows Home Server DVD. Make sure that the floppy drive or USB drive is attached before you start the computer.
  2. When the Windows Home Server Setup Error dialog box appears, click Yes to load the additional storage drivers.
  3. In the Please select the INF file of the driver to load dialog box, locate the .inf file on the floppy disk or USB drive, select it, and then click Open.

The driver loads, and Setup continues as usual.

Resolution for Symptom 2

If a network connection is not associated with the network adapter on the home server computer, you must manually install the driver for the adapter. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Obtain the driver file from the manufacturer.
  2. Follow the instructions that are provided by the manufacturer to install the driver.
  3. Restart the computer.

Important If you do not restart the computer, you may be unable to install the Windows Home Server Connector on the home computers.

MORE INFORMATION

There are many different types of storage controllers. Examples include SCSI adapters, redundant array of independent disks (RAID) adapters, and Fiber Channel adapters. Windows does not include drivers for every type of storage controller. Additionally, Windows Home Server works best when each attached hard disk drive is accessed as an individual hard disk drive. You can configure some computers and motherboards so that the hard disk drives are managed as RAID by the basic input/output system (BIOS) on the motherboard. For best results, we recommend that you turn off this configuration before you install Windows Home Server.
