SYMPTOMS
After you install certain software updates on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4), the following services do not start:
- COM+ Event System
- Removable Storage
- System Event Notification
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service
- Automatic Updates
Additionally, DCOM errors are logged in the System event log.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
- You have not installed Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4.
- You install software updates that are later than Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, you must install the following software updates in the given order:
- Windows Installer 3.1 or a later version
- Bits Intelligent Transfer Service 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1
- Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 Service Pack 1
- Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4
Note Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 must be installed manually. Update Rollup for Windows 2000 SP4 cannot be installed by using Group Policy or by using Software Update Services.
- Software updates later than Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4
