SYMPTOMS

You open a Web page in Windows Internet Explorer 7 on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista
  • Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2)

When you do this, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Then, Windows Internet Explorer 7 exits unexpectedly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Web page contains an <OBJECT> tag that uses a “PARAM NAME=back” statement.

RESOLUTION

Security update information

Hotfix information

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have Windows Internet Explorer 7 installed together with one of the following operating systems:

  • The release version of Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2003 SP1
  • Windows Server 2003 SP2
  • Windows XP SP2

Restart requirement

You must restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, remove the “PARAM NAME=back” statement from the <OBJECT> tag of the Web page.
