SYMPTOMS

In Windows Internet Explorer 7, you receive an Internet Explorer script error.

This symptom occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You use the Window.Open method in Internet Explorer 7.
  • You specify a window name parameter in the Window.Open method that includes a character such as Katakana-Hiragana Prolonged Sound Mark (Unicode character code U+30FC).


RESOLUTION

To enable this hotfix

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To enable this hotfix, you must modify a registry subkey. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. If the computer is running Windows Server 2003 or Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.

    If the computer is running Windows Vista, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, right-click Regedit.exe in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
  2. Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys, depending on whether you want to enable the hotfix for all users or for only the current user.

    All users

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

    Current user only

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

    Note If the FeatureControl registry entry is not available, you must create it.
  3. On the Edit menu, click New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_UNICODE_CHAR_IN_WINDOW_OPEN_PARAM_KB935775, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click FEATURE_UNICODE_CHAR_IN_WINDOW_OPEN_PARAM_KB935775, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type IExplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click IExplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  8. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    Note To disable the hotfix, you can set the value of the IExplore.exe registry entry to 0 (zero).
  9. Exit Registry Editor.
  10. Restart the computer.
