SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Windows Internet Explorer 7 to display a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file on a local computer, Internet Explorer 7 cannot display the SVG file. This problem occurs if the Web page that is used to display the SVG file has the following characteristics:

  • It contains an <embed > tag.
  • It uses the Mark of the Web (MOTW) feature to bypass the Local Machine Zone Lockdown feature.

This problem also occurs when you try to display Macromedia Shockwave Flash (.swf) files. This problem does not occur in Internet Explorer 6.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

The computer must be running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista
  • Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
  • Windows XP with SP2

Post-installation information

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

After you install this hotfix, you have to create and configure the Iexplore.exe registry entry. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_EMBEDTAG_MOTW_KB935575

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type iexplore.exe for the new value, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, click Decimal under Base.
  7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  8. Exit Registry Editor.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.
