BUG: Error message when you install SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services: "An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. On a 32-bit computer, you install the default instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services. Then, you install a named instance of Reporting Services in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services on the same computer. In the second installation, you also install the SQL Server 2005 database engine. When you do this, you receive the following error message:

An installation package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package 'sqlncli.msi'.

Additionally, you may also receive an error message that resembles the following in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup dialog box:

Reporting details
This error report includes: information regarding the condition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup when the problem occurred, the operation system version and computer hardware in use, and the Internet Protocol (IP) address of your computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, reinstall SQL Native Client (SNAC) before you install the second instance of SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
