SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Streets & Trips, you receive the following error message:

Windows Installer:
This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when there is an existing registry subkey from the trial version of Microsoft Streets and Trips 2005.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

1. If you are using Microsoft Windows XP or an earlier version, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
   
   If you are using WindowsVista, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click Regedit in the Programs list.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\89EE4E764F950124986A2AA05FEB6 C98

3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
4. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
5. Install Streets & Trips.
