SYMPTOMS

When you try to perform a mail merge in Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 by using a Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 contact folder, you receive the following error message:

The operation cannot be completed because of dialog or data base engine failures. Please try again later.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following methods depending on your situation.

Method 1: Update Microsoft Windows

Update Windows to the latest service pack. To do this, use Microsoft Windows Update. If a service pack that is not installed on the computer is available, the service pack will be offered.

To update Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Windows Update.
  3. If a Windows service pack is offered, install the service pack.

Method 2: Update Microsoft Data Access Components

Update the version of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) to the latest version.

To determine the version of MDAC that is installed on the computer, use the Microsoft Component Checker.

After you have determined the version of MDAC that is installed on the computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

If a version of MDAC that is later than the version that is installed on the computer is available, install the latest version of MDAC.
