This article describes how to upgrade to the original release version of Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 from one of the following releases:
- The beta version (2145) of System Center Data Protection Manager 2006
- System Center Data Protection Manager 2006 Evaluation Edition

How to upgrade from the beta version of Data Protection Manager to Data Protection Manager
You can upgrade from the beta version of Data Protection Manager to Data Protection Manager and retain the data and settings from the beta test. The upgrade process requires that you download and run the DPM Consistency Checker. The DPM Consistency Checker makes sure that replicas that were created by using the beta version of Data Protection Manager are compatible with the original release version of Data Protection Manager.
Data Protection Manager Setup upgrades the following software:
- Beta version (2145) of Data Protection Manager
- Microsoft SQL Server Evaluation Edition
- SQL Reporting Services Evaluation Edition
Before you start Data Protection Manager Setup, make sure that no Data Protection Manager jobs are scheduled to run and that Data Protection Manager Administrator Console is closed.
To upgrade from the beta version of Data Protection Manager, follow these steps:
- Install the hotfix that is described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, and then restart the computer:

- Insert the Data Protection Manager CD in the CD drive.
- Click Install Data Protection Manager.
- On the Welcome page, click Next.
- Review the license agreement. If you accept the terms, click I accept the terms of this agreement, and then click Next.
- After Data Protection Manager checks for prerequisites, type your registration information on the Product Registration page, and then click Next.
- On the Security Settings page, specify a strong password for the Microsoft$DPM$Acct and Microsoft$DPMWriter$ accounts, and then click Upgrade.
- On the Installation page, verify that the Open Data Protection Manager 2006 Administrator Console when the wizard closes check box is selected, and then click Close.
- In Data Protection Manager Administrator Console, click the Agents tab in the Management task area. Select each file server, and then click Update Available to update the file agents.
Note If Data Protection Manager Help does not open after the upgrade, delete the following file, and then reopen Data Protection Manager Help:C:\Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help\Hhcolreg.dat
- Close Data Protection Manager Administrator Console.
- Download the DPM Consistency Checker. To download this tool, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- Run the DPM Consistency Checker.
Note The tool may take as much time to run as the time that was required to create an initial replica. - The first synchronization job that runs after the upgrade marks all replicas as inconsistent. To make the replicas consistent, schedule or manually run the synchronization together with a consistency check for all the replicas.
- After the upgrade, you must reestablish report schedules and report history settings. The report history that was created before the upgrade may be lost. In this case, run each report by using the appropriate granularity of weeks or of months to recapture the report history.
- After all agents are updated, examine the Monitoring task area in Data Protection Manager Administrator Console for any jobs that may have failed during the upgrade.
How to upgrade from Data Protection Manager Evaluation Edition to Data Protection Manager
The evaluation edition of Data Protection Manager expires 120 days after it is installed. When you open Data Protection Manager Administrator Console after 120 days, you receive an error message that states that Data Protection Manager has expired. Upgrade the evaluation edition to the licensed version of Data Protection Manager.
Data Protection Manager Setup will upgrade the following software:
- Data Protection Manager Evaluation Edition
- SQL Server Evaluation Edition
- SQL Reporting Services Evaluation Edition

How to manually upgrade prerequisite software
If Data Protection Manager Setup cannot upgrade the prerequisite SQL Server software, manually upgrade the prerequisite software. Then, run Data Protection Manager Setup again to upgrade Data Protection Manager. To manually upgrade the prerequisite SQL Server products by using the Data Protection Manager CD, you must create an installation folder on the Data Protection Manager server. Then, extract the setup package in the installation folder. You can use any name and location for the installation folder. For example, you can use C:\Data Protection ManagerPrereqs.
The setup package includes the following CDs:

Contains setup files for SQL Server 2000 hotfix 859 and SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Service Pack 1
- CD 2
Contains setup files for SQL Server 2000
- CD 3
Contains setup files for SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3a
- CD 4
Contains setup files for SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services
How to extract the setup package
To extract the setup package, follow these steps:
- Insert the Data Protection Manager CD in the CD drive.
- Open a command prompt, and then move to the CD drive.
- At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
This command extracts the contents of the self-extracting setup package to the specified folder.
DPMPrerequisites.exe /x:
installation folder
How to install SQL Server 2000
To manually install SQL Server 2000, follow these steps:
- If you have not extracted the setup package, do so now.
- Run the following Setup program:
The SQL Server 2000 Setup Wizard starts.
installation folder\CD2\Autorun.exe - Click Upgrade, remove, or add components to an existing instance of SQL Server.
- Select the instance to upgrade.
- Click Upgrade your existing installation option.
- Click to select the Yes, upgrade my programs check box.
- Perform one of the following steps:
- In the Do you want to install additional components? dialog box, click No if you do not want to add any additional components.
- In the Do you want to install additional components? dialog box, click Yes if you want to add any additional components. Click to select the check boxes for the components that you want to add.
- Click Finish.
How to install SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services
To manually install SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services, follow these steps:
- If you have not extracted the setup package, do so now.
- Run the following Setup program:
The SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services Setup Wizard starts.
installation folder\CD4\Setup.exe - In the wizard, click Upgrade.
- Follow the instructions in the wizard. Accept all default settings.
After you manually upgrade SQL Server and SQL Server Reporting Services, start the Data Protection Manager Setup from the Data Protection Manager CD. Follow the steps in the upgrade wizard.
