SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You try to access files on a Server Message Block (SMB) file share. This file share resides on a Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4-based computer that has security update 885250 installed. 885250 MS05-011: Vulnerability in server message block could allow remote code execution


In this scenario, you receive an error message that is similar to one of the following:

Error 6
ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE
Invalid File Handle

Error 3
ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND
The system cannot find the path specified

Additionally, the following event is logged in the System log on the file share:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Srv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2012
Description: The server has encountered a network error.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if one of the following conditions is true:

  • The network adapter drivers on the Windows 2000 Service Pack 4-based computer are outdated or otherwise incompatible.
  • The network adapter on either the file share or the Windows client is not working correctly.
