SYMPTOMS

When you try to view the Computer Groups container in the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Administrator Console, you receive the following error message:

0x800706be: The remote procedure call failed

Additionally, the following events are logged in the Application event log on the MOM Management Server.

Message 1 Type: Application Error
Event ID: 1000

Description:
Faulting application dllhost.exe, version 5.2.3790.0, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x000120d0.

Message 2 Event ID: 4786

Description:
The system has called a custom component and that component has failed and generated an exception. This indicates a problem with the custom component. Notify the developer of this component that a failure has occurred and provide them with the information below.

CAUSE

This problem occurs after you upgrade the operating system for a MOM 2005 Management Server from Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

This hotfix restarts the MOM service on the Management Server.

Installation information

You must install this hotfix on each MOM 2005 Management Server that is running Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later Windows Server 2003 service packs. To install this hotfix, follow these steps:

  1. Copy the file MOM2005-RTM-KB896989-X86-ENU.EXE to a local folder or to a shared folder on the network.
  2. On the Management Server, run MOM2005-RTM-KB896989-X86-ENU.EXE. You can run MOM2005-RTM-KB896989-X86-ENU.EXE by using Windows Explorer or a Command Prompt.

Note This hotfix will stop and then restart the MOM service to force the changes to take effect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Service Pack 1.
