INTRODUCTION
This article describes the updates and hotfixes that we recommend for Microsoft Windows 2000-based server clusters. When you update your Windows 2000-based server cluster, you help reduce downtime. You also help decrease the number of support issues that you may experience.
Note We recommend that you evaluate these updates and hotfixes to determine whether they might resolve problems in your environment. If you determine that cluster nodes in your environment may experience the problem that an update or a hotfix addresses, apply the update or the hotfix on each one of the cluster nodes in your environment.
A short summary appears together with each hotfix and update that appears in the "More Information" section. This summary does not replace the information that is contained in the original Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article for each update and hotfix. Use the information that appears in the "More Information" section to help you determine whether each update or hotfix applies to your server cluster. Before you apply an update or a hotfix, we recommend that you review the original KB article that describes it.

Many of these articles are included in Windows Server 2000 update rollup package. We recommend that you install the update rollup package to get all of the included hotfixes. If you are unable to install the update rollup package, you should review and install the hotfixes individually. We recommend that you upgrade all Windows 2000-based cluster nodes to Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 (SP4). Additionally, we recommend that you apply all the following post-SP4 hotfixes that are appropriate for your environment:
Hotfixes that are not included in the update rollup package
- KB 293778 This hotfix resolves a problem that may occur if multiple-path software that uses multiple host bus adaptors (HBAs) malfunctions. When this problem occurs, the disk signature on a cluster disk resource changes. Therefore, the disk resource fails. All the resources that depend on that disk resource also fail. - KB 872970 This hotfix resolves several problems that may cause the quorum log file (Quolog.log) to become corrupted. - KB 873437 This hotfix resolves a problem where the chkdsk command may incorrectly identify problems with the security descriptors of files and folders. When this problem occurs, permissions for certain files or folders may be reset to their default values. - KB 836760 This hotfix resolves a problem that may occur when a cluster node accesses a storage device. When this problem occurs, the cluster node may sometimes experience a Stop 0x7F error when it accesses the storage device. - KB 832145 This hotfix resolves a problem that may occur after you install Windows 2000 SP4. When this problem occurs, event log information may no longer replicate to other cluster nodes. Therefore, you cannot view event log information from only one cluster node. Instead, you must view the event log information on each node of the server cluster. Hotfixes that are included in the update rollup package
- KB 831375 This hotfix resolves a problem that occurs when you run the chkdsk command in fix mode with the /F or the /R options. This problem also occurs if a disk is marked as "dirty" when a cluster disk resource is brought online. When this problem occurs, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
- The discretionary access control list (DACL) entries for some files may revert to their default values.
- Security descriptor information is removed from some files or folders.

- KB 872790 This hotfix resolves a problem that may prevent a client computer from connecting to a cluster file share resource. - KB 829246 This hotfix resolves a problem where an event log may be corrupted if the log file is full and overwrites older event log entries.
