SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Streets and Trips or Microsoft MapPoint, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Install error 1324 The path My Pictures contains an invalid character.

Error 1324 invalid drive Drive_Letter

CAUSE

This issue may occur for one of the following reasons:

  • Registry entries are pointing to a My Pictures folder that has been deleted or moved.
  • Registry entries are pointing to a drive letter that is not available, is disconnected, or has been removed.
  • Your DVD or CD drive is not working correctly, or the installation media that you are using is faulty.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Method 1

If the My Pictures folder is not on your computer, add a new folder that is named My Pictures, and then change the registry to point to the My Pictures folder. To do this, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, and then double-click My Documents.
  2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.
  3. Type My Pictures, and then press ENTER to name the new folder.
  4. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  5. Expand the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders

  6. Click Shell Folders, right-click My Pictures, and then click Modify.
  7. In the Value data box, type the path of the My Pictures folder that you added in steps 1 through 3, and then click OK.

For example, the path of the My Pictures folder may be one of the following:
    • C:\My Documents\My Pictures
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_Name\My Documents\My Pictures
    • %USERPROFILE%\My Documents\My Pictures
  8. Expand the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

  9. Click User Shell Folders, right-click My Pictures, and then click Modify.
  10. In the Value data box, type the path of the My Pictures folder, and then click OK.
  11. Expand the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

  12. Click User Shell Folders, right-click My Pictures, and then click Modify.
  13. In the Value data box, type the path of the My Pictures folder, and then click OK.
  14. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer.
  15. Install Streets and Trips or MapPoint.

Method 2

If a drive letter is no longer available, is disconnected, or has been removed, search the registry for all the entries that point to the incorrect drive letter. Then, change the entries to the drive letter of your DVD or CD drive. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Find.
  3. In the Find what box, type the drive letter that is no longer available, is disconnected, or has been removed, and then click Find next. For example, type E:, and then click Find next.
  4. Right-click the entry that you find, and then click Modify.
  5. Change the text in the Value data box so that it has the correct drive letter.
  6. Press F3 to find the next entry.
  7. Repeat steps 4 through 6 until you find all the entries in the registry that must be corrected.
  8. Quit Registry Editor, restart your computer, and then install Streets and Trips or MapPoint.

Method 3

If your DVD or CD drive is not working correctly or the installation media that you are using is faulty, follow these steps:

  • If a different DVD or CD drive is available, use the other drive to install Streets and Trips or MapPoint.
  • Copy the installation files from the CD to a folder on your hard disk. Install Streets and Trips or MapPoint from the folder on your hard disk.
  • If you cannot copy the installation files to your hard disk, verify that the CD or DVD drive can copy files from a different disc. If the drive can copy files from a different disc to your hard disk, obtain a new copy of the Streets and Trips or MapPoint installation media.
