SYMPTOMS

If you use the OHotFix program to install Microsoft Office update files, you are prompted to provide the location of the original source files for Microsoft Office 2000 and later versions.

This symptom occurs if you run a Microsoft Windows-based computer and you use removable media such as a custom CD-ROM or a custom DVD-ROM to run the OHotFix program. The symptom occurs even if the removable media contains Office source files.

CAUSE

The Windows-based client computer uses the Microsoft Windows Installer program as the "installation engine" to install the Office update files. The Microsoft Windows Installer program checks for the volume label of the removable media to make sure that the correct disk is in the CD drive or in the DVD drive before it tries to install files.

There is a difference in the volume label of the removable media that contains the Microsoft Office update files and of the physical media where Office 2000 or later versions are installed. Because of this, the same removable media cannot be used for both the Office product source and the Office update source.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, copy all the required OHotFix program files and the relevant Office update files from the removable media to the local hard disk. Then, install the update files from the local hard disk.
