Symptoms of the problem
If you purchase and then download one of the Microsoft Money products that are listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one of the following symptoms:
- Money indicates that you are still using a trial version. You may receive a pop-up window that contains a warning that states that Money will expire. Or, you may receive a message that states that the version of Money that is listed when you click About Microsoft Money on the Help menu will show that the Money version is Trial.
- When you select to download Money, the download window may disappear without completing the installation.
- Additional Money files are not downloaded.
- When you visit the following Microsoft Web site, your online purchase displays a status of EXPIRED:
Methods to resolve the problem
Method1: Download the Money rebate information or online purchase
If you closed the rebate coupon page, or if you have to download the online purchase, visit the appropriate Microsoft Web site. Then, follow the instructions that appear on the screen.

Method 2: Upgrade a Money trial version installation
If you already have Money installed and it is displayed as the Trial version, follow these steps.
Step 1: Verify the Windows Live ID credentials
Money may appear as a trial version if you log on to your Money data file by using a different set of Windows Live ID credentials than the credentials that you used to purchase Money. To verify that the Windows Live ID is the same, follow these steps:
- Start Money. You will see the sign in screen.
- On the File menu, click New.
- Type a file name such as Test, and then click OK.
- Click Next.
- Review the Online privacy and security agreement, and then click Accept.
- Click I already have Passport Network credentials, and then click Next.
- Enter the Windows Live ID that you used to purchase Money, and then click Next.
- Click Next.
- Click Skip account setup, and then click Finish to complete the setup of the new file.
Step 2: Restart the computer and then start Money to download additional components
- Restart the computer, and then start Money.
- If you are prompted to download additional components, click Yes. When this download is finished, you will receive a message that states that the download is finished. Restart the computer, and then open the Test Money file that you created in the "Step 1: Verify the Windows Live ID credentials" section. Sign in by using your Windows Live ID. Money should now update and should no longer appear as the Trial version.
- You can now open your Money data file and continue to work. To do this, start Money, on the File menu, click the Money data file that you want to select from the list.
If Money still appears as the Trial version, continue to Method 3.
Method 3: Troubleshoot the Money installation
Money 2007 and Money Plus
Visit the following Web site, and then use the credentials that were sent in the e-mail message confirmation from Digital River:

Money 2005 and Money 2006
- Visit the following MSN Web site, and then log on by using your Windows Live ID: This Web site will show you the version of the Microsoft Money download that is associated with your Windows Live ID. After you confirm that your Windows Live ID is associated to the full Money version, go to step 2. If you see that your download purchase has been canceled, telephone Microsoft Billing at 1-866-672-4551.
- Close Money, and then close all the programs that are running on the computer.
- If you have any firewall software installed on the computer, enter an exception that gives Money access. If you are not sure how to do this, see the product documentation or visit the Helpdesk for your firewall.
- After the exception is enabled in the firewall software, start Money, and then log on to the Money data file again by using the Windows Live ID that you used to purchase the program. Give the program several minutes.
- If you are prompted to download additional components, click Yes.
When this download is finished, you receive a message that states that the download is finished. - Restart the computer, and then log back on to your Money data file by using your Windows Live ID.
Money should be updated and should no longer appear as the Trial version. If you are not prompted to download additional components, check whether Money still appears as the Trial version. If Money still appears as the Trial version, continue to Method 4.
Method 4: Remove and then reinstall Money
If you have made sure that you are logged on by using the correct Windows Live ID and that there are no firewall programs that are interfering with Money’s download, the problem may be the Trial installation. To troubleshoot this issue, remove and then reinstall Money. To do this, follow these steps:
- Remove Money.

- After you install Money, start Money, and then log on by using the same Windows Live ID that you used to purchase the program.
