SYMPTOMS
By default, the Preserve sender's display name on message option is enabled in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. The display name is the name that appears in Address Book. When a user sends a message, the display name of the user appears in the message. You cannot configure Exchange 2003 so that the simple display name of the user appears instead of the display name in outgoing messages.
Note The Use Simple Display Name option applies only to e-mail that is sent to servers that are outside the Exchange Server organization.
RESOLUTION

Note Because of file dependencies, this hotfix requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.

To do this, follow these steps:
- Log on to your Exchange 2003 computer.
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\ParametersSystem\Use Simple Display Name - Double-click Use Simple Display Name.
- Perform either of the following steps, as appropriate:
- If you want the simple display name to appear in outgoing messages, type 1 in the Value data box.
- If you do not want the simple display name to appear in outgoing messages, type 0 in the Value data box.
- Click OK.
- Quit Registry Editor.
