SYMPTOMS

Every other time that you open a document in an instance of Microsoft Word 2002 or of Microsoft Office Word 2003 that is running on a Microsoft Windows 2000 terminal server or on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 terminal server, you may experience one of the following symptoms:

  • The document opens in recovery mode.
  • You receive the following error message:

Word has detected a problem with the existing Normal.dot. Would you like to create a new Normal.dot?

Note Terminal Services is a service on servers that are running Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003. It is a thin-client architecture in which all application processing occurs centrally on the server.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the DisabledItems subkey and the Startup subkey are written to the following registry key:

Word 2002

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\Resiliency

Word 2003

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Resiliency
