SYMPTOMS

A Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer may incorrectly assign multiple drive letters to a universal serial bus (USB) device when you attach the device to the computer.

Note This problem typically occurs after you apply the hotfix that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 832097, or after you apply the security update for Microsoft Windows that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 835732.

CAUSE

Some original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of removable media storage devices might want to hide the drive volume of a USB device and then reveal the drive volume later.

This problem occurs if the manufacturer of the USB device uses the IOCTL_MOUNTMGR_VOLUME_ARRIVAL_NOTIFICATION Input Output Control (IOCTL) to reveal the drive volume.
