- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
SYMPTOMS
If two programs access the same Enhanced Metafile (EMF) file in Microsoft Windows 2000, and that .emf file is stored in a shared folder on a server that resides on either your local area network (LAN) or your wide area network (WAN), the image may be slow to render. In other words, it takes longer than expected for the image to display in the program.
For example, you may experience these symptoms in the following scenario:
- You use a graphics program to open an .emf file.
- You start Microsoft Word, open a Word document, and then link the .emf file to the document.
- After the image is displayed in the Word document, you switch focus to the graphics program.
In this scenario, your system performance decreases, and it may take several minutes before the image is displayed in the graphics program.
CAUSE
This problem occurs after you install the update that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The MS04-011 security update introduces a regression. This regression causes the client computer to send additional Server Message Block (SMB) packets to the server.
