SYMPTOMS

After you install the security update that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article 835732, all the following symptoms occur:

  • You cannot start Microsoft Windows Explorer.
  • You cannot run the Hotfix.exe program.
  • If you try to run any program or process that maps the Kernel32.dll file to its address space, you receive the following error message:

    The system dll "kernel32.dll" was relocated in memory. The application cannot be run properly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:

  • You are running the Chinese version of Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 with Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a) installed.
  • You install the Chinese version of the security update for Windows NT Workstation 4.0 that is described in KB article 835732.

This problem occurs because the Chinese version of the security update contains an incorrect build of the Gdi32.dll file.
