"Windows Installer" message appears every time that you start the Lithuanian, the Croatian, the Estonian, or the Ukrainian language version of Access 2002

SYMPTOMS

Every time that you start Microsoft Access 2002, an auto-repair occurs and you receive the following message before Access 2002 starts:

Preparing to install...

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:

  • You install Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).
  • You start one of the following language versions of Access 2002:
    • Lithuanian
    • Croatian
    • Estonian
    • Ukrainian


WORKAROUND

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Quit your Office XP programs.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Locate the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{53230322-172B-11D0-AD40-00A0C90DC8D9}\Version

  4. With the Version subkey selected, right-click Default in the right pane, and then click Modify.
  5. In the Value data box, delete the value 8.0.
  6. In the Value data box, type 8.1, and then click OK.
  7. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
