APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

SYMPTOMS

A domain member may not be able to log on to a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer with cached credentials if the user logs on with a smart card that has used more than the number of credentials that can be cached. The following Group Policy setting determines the number of credentials that can be cached:

Computer Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Interactive Logon: Number of previous logons to cache

CAUSE

Every time that you use a smart card to log on, you use one entry in the credentials cache. By default, the number of cached credentials is 10. If you use the same or a different smart card to log on ten times, you use all the entries in the cache, and you cannot log on again by using cached domain credentials. That is, you cannot log on when you are disconnected from the network.
