USB devices may not work after your Toshiba notebook computer returns from standby in Windows XP

When one or more of the following conditions are true, the universal serial bus (USB) devices that are connected to your computer may not function when your computer resumes from a standby state:

  • You have one of the following Toshiba notebook computers together with a port replicator:

    Toshiba Portege 4000
    Toshiba DynaBook SS M3/M4
    Toshiba DynaBook SS 4000

  • The BIOS version of your Toshiba notebook computer is later than v2.10.
  • You are running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) together with the USB 1.1 and 2.0 updates.

This problem may occur if you install a new USB device.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

  • Leave all your USB Devices plugged in the port replicator. Do not add any new devices until you have restarted your computer.
  • Do not configure your computer to turn off USB devices to save power while the computer is on standby. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
    2. In System Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
    3. In Device Manager, double-click Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
    4. Right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties.
    5. In USB Root Hub Properties, click the Power Management tab, and then click to clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.
    6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each instance of USB Root Hub that is listed in Device Manager.
  • Undock your computer from the port replicator. This problem does not occur when the Portege 4000 is not docked in a port replicator.
  • Scan your computer for new hardware. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
    2. In System Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
    3. In Device Manager, click Universal Serial Bus Controllers, click Action, and then click Scan for new hardware.
  • Remove the Windows XP SP1 USB 1.1 and 2.0 Update. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
    2. In Add or Remove Programs, locate and then click Windows XP Hotfix - KB822603, and then click Remove.
