SYMPTOMS
When you start a Microsoft Windows 2000-based server in physical address extension (PAE) mode by adding the /PAE switch to the Windows 2000 Boot.ini file, this may generate several access violations in PAE-capable programs that use memory space in the extended memory region.
CAUSE
This problem may occur if memory addresses in the extended memory region contain corrupted data, and then PAE-capable programs access this data.
You may be experiencing this problem if you notice that random memory locations have been changed to all zeros in the user-dump file that comes from the program that generates the access violation.
