The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service crashes when a user tries to connect to newsgroups by using Outlook Express

SYMPTOMS

When a user tries to use Microsoft Outlook Express to connect to the newsgroups on a computer that is running Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service may crash.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • You migrated files or e-mail messages from another e-mail system to your Exchange 2000 server.
  • The Client Submit Time property in the files that you migrated is set to zero (0) or NULL.


RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
