Text reflows after you change the publication type in Publisher 2003

Article ID: 828508

Article Last Modified on 2/5/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003
  • Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 with Digital Imaging

SYMPTOMS

If you change the publication type (in the Page Setup dialog box) for a Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 publication, some text in some text frames might reflow. This might occur, for example, if you change the publication type from Custom Banner to Custom, or from Envelope to Full Page.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if both of the following conditions are true:

  • The margin guides for the publication were set to something other than one inch on all sides.
  • Paragraphs have the Align text to baseline guides feature enabled.

When you change the publication type, the publication margin guides are reset to 1 inch on all sides. Because the baseline guides are calculated from the margin guides, any text that aligns to them may change position.

RESOLUTION

This resolution assumes that you are working on a copy of the publication. If you are working on the original publication, close it without saving, and then make a copy to work on. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Open the original publication.
  2. On the Arrange menu, click Layout Guides.
  3. On the Margin Guides tab, note the values in the Left, Right, Top, and Bottom fields (or the Inside, Outside, Top, and Bottom fields if the publication is set up as a booklet).
  4. Open the copy of the publication that you are editing.
  5. On the Arrange menu, click Layout Guides.
  6. Change the margin guides to match those in the original publication.
  7. Click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

The baseline guides are a horizontal grid calculated from the margin guides. The problem occurs when the baseline guide size is not an even multiple of the top margin guide.
For example, assume the baseline is set to 12 points and the top margin is .25 inch (about 18 points). In this situation there are only 1.5 baseline guides between the edge of the page and the margin guide. If you change the margin guides to an even multiple of the baseline guide size (such as 1 inch), the baseline guide grid changes and any text that is aligned to the baseline guides will reflow.

To view the baseline guides, follow these steps:

  1. Open the publication.
  2. On the View menu, point to Baseline Guides, click Horizontal to view horizontal lines, repeat, and then click Vertical to view vertical lines.

The baseline guides now appear on the page.
