SYMPTOMS
After you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1), a custom pluggable protocol handler may not be able to set or to retrieve cookies from Web sites.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, install the hotfix that is described later in this article, and then modify the registry.
Hotfix Information
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

Registry Information

To use this hotfix, you must set a registry key and a string value. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings - Right-click the Internet Settings key, point to New, and then click Key.
- Type PluggableProtocols.
- Right-click the PluggableProtocols key, point to New, and then click String Value.
- Type the name of the pluggable protocol that you want to enable to access cookies, and then press ENTER.
For example, to enable the myhttp:// protocol to allow access to cookies, type myhttp. The string can have any value that you want. By default, the value is blank.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1.
The PluggableProtocols registry key setting is also available in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and in Microsoft Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).
