SYMPTOMS
When you try to print from Outlook 2003, you may receive the following error message:
CAUSE
This behavior may occur if either of the following conditions exists:
- You do not have a default printer installed.
- Outlook cannot locate your printer.
Note If you are running Outlook from a remote server (Microsoft Windows NT Terminal Server Edition), you may have to contact your network administrator. See the article that is listed in the "Reference" section of this article for more information.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, use one of the following methods:
If You Do Not Have a Printer Installed
If you do not have a printer installed, use the Add Printer Wizard to install a printer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Double-click Add Printer, and then follow the Add Printer Wizard instructions.
Note Some printers have their own setup routines that bypass the Add Printer Wizard. If this behavior occurs, follow the instructions in the documentation that came with your printer.
If you are using Outlook from a Windows Terminal Server, you may not have the required administrator permissions to add a printer.

If Outlook Cannot Find Your Printer
If Outlook cannot find your printer, you may have a printer installed but it may not be designated as your default printer. To designate the printer as your default printer, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Right-click the Printer icon, and then click Set as Default Printer.
If you have a default printer installed but Outlook cannot locate it, remove and re-install the printer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
- Right-click the Printer icon, and then click Delete.
Click Yes if you receive a prompt to remove extra files.
- Double-click Add Printer, and then follow the Add Printer Wizard instructions.
Click Yes if you receive a prompt to replace the existing files.
