Exchange 2000 Server users unexpectedly receive two copies of the same message in their Inbox

Article ID: 826746

Article Last Modified on 10/26/2006

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

SYMPTOMS

In certain situations, you may find that a user whose mailbox is stored on a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer unexpectedly receives two copies of the same message in their Inbox.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Information Store incorrectly processes the PR_CLIENT_SUBMIT_TIME property of Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format (TNEF) messages. Because the PR_CLIENT_SUBMIT_TIME property of the messages that are sent by using a MAPI and that are sent by using the Internet are different, two copies of the message are delivered to the Inbox of the recipient. For example, this problem may occur in a scenario where both the following conditions are true:

  • In an environment where two Exchange sites are connect by a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) connector, an Exchange 2000 user in one site sends an e-mail message to a recipient who is located in the same site as the sender and to a recipient who is located in the other Exchange site.
  • The recipient in the other Exchange site has an alternate recipient who is set to the other recipient who is located in the same site as the sender.

In this situation, the recipient who is located in the same site as the sender receives two copies of the same message.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server service pack that contains this hotfix.
