SUMMARY

This article describes how to convert a Portable Document Format (.pdf) document from Adobe Acrobat Reader to Microsoft Office Word 2003.

Word 2003 does not directly support conversion from .pdf. Documents are saved for viewing and exchanging in Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Acrobat Exchange for Windows in the .pdf format.

Note Microsoft does not provide a text converter to convert Word document files to Acrobat (*.pdf) format.

Acrobat Reader Version 4.0 or Later

To copy a page of the .pdf file to Word, follow these steps:

  1. Open the .pdf file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. Find the page that you want to copy.
  3. On the Basic Tools toolbar, click Text Select Tool.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  6. Switch to Word, and then click Paste on the Edit menu.

In Acrobat 5.0 you can save a file in a graphic format such as a .jpg file or a .tif file. To save a file as a graphic, follow these steps:

  1. Click File, and then click Save As.
  2. In the Object name box, type the name for your file.
  3. In the Save as type box, select a graphic file format (for example, Encapsulated PostScript, JPEG, PNG, TIFF) from the drop down menu.

Note When you paste the text, it may not be formatted as it was in the .pdf file, and you see different results in different programs. You may notice that some letters are missing and the font and spacing may not be correct. To copy the whole .pdf file to Word, follow these steps:

  1. Open the .pdf file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. On the View menu, click Continuous.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  5. Switch to Word, and then click Paste on the Edit menu.

To copy graphics, follow these steps:

  1. Open the .pdf file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  2. Press SHIFT, and then click Text Select Tool.


Without releasing the mouse button, click Graphic Select Tool on the toolbar that appears.

  1. When the insertion point changes to a cross-hair icon, draw a rectangle around the graphic.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  3. Switch to Word, and then on the Edit menu, click Paste.

To determine if you will be permitted to copy text, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, point to Document Info, and then click Security.
  2. If Selecting Text and Graphics is set to Allowed, you can copy the text and the graphics, and then paste the selection in another program.

Acrobat Reader Versions 3.0 or Earlier

To copy the text from a .pdf file if you are using Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 or earlier, follow these steps:

  1. Open your .pdf document with Adobe Acrobat Reader
  2. Select the content of the current screen image that you want to use in Word by doing one of the following:
    1. To select and copy text in Adobe Acrobat Reader, follow these steps:
      1. On the Tools menu, click Select Text.
      2. Select the text that you want to copy.
    2. To select and copy a graphic, follow these steps:
      1. On the Tools menu, click Select Graphics.
      2. Drag the cross-hair mouse pointer (the cross-hair mouse pointer is a large plus sign [+]) around the picture or graphic that you want to copy.
  3. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  4. In Microsoft Word, click Paste on the Edit menu.
