Movie Maker does not upgrade to Movie Maker 2 in Windows XP

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Microsoft Windows Movie Maker from one of the following Microsoft Web sites, Movie Maker may not upgrade to Movie Maker 2:

CAUSE

This problem may occur if some .dll files and the Moviemk.exe file are not replaced during setup.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Quit Movie Maker.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
  3. In Windows Explorer, locate the following folder:

    C:\Windows\RegisteredPackages\{60BFF50D-FB2C-4498-A577-C9548C390BB9}

  4. Copy the files contained in the {60BFF50D-FB2C-4498-A577-C9548C390BB9} folder to the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Movie Maker

  5. Click Yes to All in the Confirm File Replace dialog box.
  6. In the C:\Program Files\Movie Maker folder, right-click the Mm20ex.inf file, and then click Install.
  7. Double-click the Moviemk.exe file to start Movie Maker 2.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
