SYMPTOMS

On your Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server computer, when you view the MSExchangeIS Mailbox\Send Queue Size performance counter, you notice that the number of items that are in the mailbox store send queue slowly increases over time. The number of items does not return to zero. This problem occurs even if you dismount and then remount the mailbox store, or if you restart the Information Store service.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you use Microsoft Outlook to open a message that is in your Outbox folder, and if you then delete the message. In this situation, the submission of the message is stopped, but the message is not removed from the send queue. When Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) picks up the message from the send queue, SMTP cannot open the message, and SMTP silently ignores the error. The message remains in the send queue on the Exchange 2000 computer; messages that remain in the send queue cause the send queue size to increase over time.
