SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a Windows component, you may receive a message that is similar to the following, where version is the version of your Windows operating system:

Copying Files…
The file named file name on Windows version CD-ROM cannot be found.
Please insert the disk labeled 'Windows version CD-ROM', and then click OK.

When you insert the CD-ROM and then click OK, you receive the same message again. You may not be able to locate the Windows installation files.

Note Because this issue most frequently occurs with a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or a Microsoft Windows 98 guest operating system, this article assumes that you are using either of these guest operating systems.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the drive structure of your virtual machine, or the location of the Windows installation files on your virtual machine, has changed. For example, your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive may have been drive D when Windows was installed. However, if additional virtual drives are connected (such as drive D and drive E), the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive may become drive F. In this scenario, Windows searches for the installation files in the D:\Win9x folder, even though the files may now be located in the E:\Win9x folder or in the F:\Win9x folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.
Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps. .

  1. Insert the Virtual PC disk in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then click OK.
  2. If you still receive the error message, click OK to dismiss the error message, and then type D:\Win9x or D:\Win98 in the Copy files from box. Click OK.

Note The Windows installation files for Windows 98 are located on the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the Win98 folder. The Windows installation files for Windows Millennium Edition (Me) are located on the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the Win9x folder.

  1. If you still receive the error message, click OK to dismiss the error message, and then type E:\Win9x in the Copy files from box. Click OK.
  2. If you still receive the error message, click OK to dismiss the error message, and then type F:\Win9x in the Copy files from box. Click OK.

Notes

  • Click the arrow to the right of the Copy files from box to view possible locations for previously accessed files. Scroll up and down to view the complete list.
  • It may be useful to locate the file that Windows is searching for by using the Windows Search feature. Click Start, point to Search (or Find), and then click Files or Folders to search for the file name that is listed in the Copying Files window.
